Son. Brother. Husband. Father. Explorer. Miner. Mentor. Gentleman. George Robledo was many things to many different people throughout his remarkable life. But, most famously of all, George Robledo was a football player – and a very good one at that. In fact he was the first overseas star of English football.
Born in Oficina Alianza, a mining town in Chile’s Atacama Desert, George came to the United Kingdom with his family in 1932, settling in another mining area, this time in Yorkshire, England. As a teenager he worked in a coal mine during the Second World War, helping to fuel the war effort against Germany. Once hostilities were over, George joined Barnsley Football Club where he made a name for himself as a scorer and creator of goals, becoming a local hero in the process.
