'The Carice Singers and Spitalfields Music have co-commissioned the Chilean composer Aníbal Vidal to create a major new choral work with the generous support of the Anglo Chilean Society, the Hinrichsen Foundation, and private donors. 'Theatre of Origins' will present a thrilling, immersive vision of the world's beginning in a work of ambitious scope for sixteen singers lasting up to 30 minutes. A libretto, specially written by Thomas Lowen, will combine creation myths from Pre-Hispanic American traditions, particularly those of Mapuche mythology, alongside those of Ancient Greece, Rome, Indo-European and Eastern cultures. By intertwining these stories, the work aspires to offer a universal and thought-provoking drama on humanity’s shared origins and collective heritage.
Aníbal Vidal writes: “After a successful collaboration with The Carice Singers on my 7-minute work for eight voices, ‘Just a Déjà Vu Cariño’, written during the Cheltenham Music Festival Composer Academy, I am now looking to developing longer and more complex compositional structures, incorporating storytelling, in a new work for this extraordinary vocal ensemble. Additionally, will expand vocal sonorities by incorporating small instruments, objects, or toys to create a vibrant, multi-layered sound palette for the piece.”
Theatre of Origins by Aníbal Vidal will receive its world premiere at the Spitalfields Music Festival on Tuesday 1st July 2025. Further details and tickets will be released with the Festival's public announcement towards the end of April.
Aníbal Vidal's compositions have been performed by ensembles and orchestras in Europe, America, and Asia, including Ensemble Intercontemporain, quatuor Bozzini, Britten Sinfonia, Mise-En Ensemble, MI Orchestra, Divertimento Ensemble, Ensemble U, Sychronos Ensemble, among others. His creative process blends the raw nature of traditional and unconventional instruments, objects, and the human voice within a classical music setting, forming a personal sound palette driven by the physicality of sound and direct experimentation with its source.
Vidal recently received the third edition of the Pisar Prize, awarded by the Julliard School and Villa Albertine, to premiere a new orchestral work at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées with the Les Siècles orchestra in November 2025. This includes a one-month artist residency at Juilliard School in New York. This will include a one-month artist residency at the Julliard School in New York. His first chamber music album Cuerdas y Rugidos (Strings & Roars), featuring chamber works, has recently been released in collaboration with the Brompton and Alkyona quartets, along with José Luis Urquieta and Ensamble Fractura.'
