UK-based International Arts & Cultural Manager, Tom Curteis travelled to Santiago in January 2025 to participate in a bespoke research residency. This offered Tom the unique opportunity to connect with a variety of contemporary Chilean performance artists and to participate in the Santiago a Mil International Festival’s PLATEA 25 platform, a showcasing programme which fosters networking and international creative collaboration. Supported by Creative Producer, Horacio Pérez Rodríguez, Tom engaged in a tailored schedule of networking and cultural exchange with a variety of artists and cultural professionals in Chile. Through this, Tom gained new insights into how Santiago a Mil curates its festival and integrates creative placemaking strategies. The experience also helped to forge new connections between Tom and local independent performance artists, with a focus on peer-learning from those who are pioneering innovative accessibility & inclusion models. A particular highlight for Tom was connecting with colleagues at NAVE - the first Center for Creation and Artistic Residency dedicated to the Performing Arts in Latin America. This residency has provided Tom with an opportunity to develop and strengthen collaborative grassroot creative networks between the UK and Chile’s performing arts sectors, paving the way for long-term cultural collaboration.
Tom was awarded a grant from the General Funds, which enabled him to participate in several platforms and performances featuring Chilean artists.
